摘要：This paper explores the role of scientific fictions (Sci-Fi) in fostering curiosity and creativity, which are key to technological advancement. We exploit the short-term prosperity of Sci-Fi in China in early 1980s. Our cohort DID design leverages the variation in locality and time of the circulation of Sci-Fi magazines. We show that for the individuals who exposed to Sci-Fi between age 12 and 22, the probability to become professional technicians are significantly higher, and their job task is more research-oriented. We provide evidence that the exposure to Sci-Fi magazines increases openness, encourages tolerance to differences, reduces religiosity, and raises risk preferences. Our findings highlight how individual exposure to new ideas in impressionable ages could have long-term impact on occupational choice and human capital formation.

梁平漢，中山大學(xué)政治與公共事務(wù)管理學(xué)院教授，博士生導(dǎo)師，中國數(shù)量經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)會(huì)理事，中國運(yùn)籌學(xué)會(huì)博弈論分會(huì)理事，《產(chǎn)業(yè)經(jīng)濟(jì)評(píng)論》執(zhí)行副主編。研究政府治理、行為與實(shí)驗(yàn)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)、數(shù)字技術(shù)的社會(huì)影響等，在Economic Journal, Games and Economic Behavior, World Development, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Regional Science, 《經(jīng)濟(jì)研究》《管理世界》等期刊發(fā)表論文數(shù)十篇，主持國家社科重點(diǎn)、國家自科面上（結(jié)項(xiàng)評(píng)估優(yōu)），國家自科青年（結(jié)項(xiàng)評(píng)估優(yōu)）等課題，曾獲霍英東基金會(huì)高等院校優(yōu)秀青年教師獎(jiǎng)，教育部哲學(xué)社會(huì)科學(xué)優(yōu)秀成果獎(jiǎng)等表彰。擔(dān)任教育部經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)101計(jì)劃《微觀經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)》編寫組成員，曾在“一席”進(jìn)行學(xué)術(shù)報(bào)告。
